OUR to Host 5G Technology Regional Media Workshop

(KINGSTON, Jamaica; 2021 September 23): The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) will host a Regional Media Workshop on 2021 September 30 on the topic,
‘5G Technology: is the Region Ready?’

The virtual event is to provide a platform for journalists across the Caribbean to get more information on 5G Technology including the latest developments in various jurisdictions in the region. Over one hundred participants have so far registered for the workshop, which is endorsed by the Association of Caribbean Media Workers.

Journalists will engage telecoms providers, regulators and suppliers of the technology on issues pertaining to the topic as they gain a better understanding of the platform and what it will mean for service delivery.

Director of Consumer and Public Affairs at the OUR, Yvonne Nicholson said, “We note the dialogue in the public space last year about whether 5G Technology has entered the region, and fears of possible health risks. This workshop will create an opportunity for participants to ask questions of the experts and so be in a better position to inform their readers, viewers and listeners when the need arises.”

5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications technology. It is designed to support new applications through Gigabit data rates, low latency and high reliability.

The regional workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations or CANTO, a non-profit association made up of operators, organizations, companies and individuals in the ICT sector in the region and further afield.
